It was a surprising turn of events at the Colchester Community Stadium as Spurs were knocked out of the Carabao cup by underdogs Colchester United. Tottenham's boss Mauricio Pochettino has been blamed by fans for the defeat, after making ten changes to his regular starting lineup. The match saw Troy Parrott make his senior debut and join the likes of Robbie Keane as the few Irish players to ever play for Tottenham. While the striker did have a chance at goal, he often dropped too deep to pick up possession.
Parrott was replaced by Christian Eriksen 20-minutes into the second half in a bid to find the net. Spurs held possession for most of the game but were unable to convert the chances they created. After 90-minutes of a goalless draw, it all came down to a penalty shootout. Erickson took the first kick only to see it saved by Garden. Tottenham was handed a lifeline when Jevani Panenka's kick was saved by Gazzaniga. However, after Moura's miss, Lapslie won the game for Colchester by netting his penalty kick.
Following the exit from Carabao Cup, Pochettino is on the lookout for players that can bolster his team in the January transfer window. The defeat to Colchester United means that Spurs are yet to win an away game this season. Tottenham was unable to make any signing or sell players in the summer transfer window. According to Sky Sport, the manager agrees that his team is currently unsettled and that there is a need for the team to mentally connect if they are going to win games.
Tottenham needs to start winning trophies if they are to be considered as one of the big guns in football. It is safe to say that many football lovers will go all-in on Tottenham in the game against Colchester, especially with the awesome odds esports betting gave them. Spurs former manager Tim Sherwood believes that Pochettino made a wrong call by benching most of big players. According to him, a team needing to win a trophy should use his best players and bring them off after the job was done.
Spurs forward Harry Kane admits that there is no excuse following the disappointing crash out from the Carabao Cup. Spurs who are unimpressive in the start of the season, are 10 points behind league leaders Liverpool after winning just two of their first 6 games in the EPL. According to Fox Sports Australia, the striker admits that the team has had a disappointing start but will hopefully turn around in the following games. He also added that game management is something the team needs to get better at to claim points.
Tottenham who will be playing against Southampton on Saturday is missing new signings Lo Celso and Sessegnon to injury. Juan Foyth is however believed to be fit and may likely make an appearance against Southampton. Kane is expected back in the lineup after been rested on Tuesday. Spurs who lost 2-1 to Southampton earlier this year, have scored twelve goals and conceded eight in the EPL so far. After playing Southampton, the team will face Brighton & Hove Albion and Watford next in their next EPL fixtures.
