Percy Smith: 1 January 1930 - 6 May 1935
After a successful career as player and manager, Smith resigned from Bury to take over at Tottenham. Smith's teams played attractive short passing football with the emphasis on attack. Spurs won promotion in 1932/3 and finished third in their first season back in Division 1. In the next season, injuries contributed to Spurs winning only twice after Christmas and were relegated. Smith left blaming board interference Percy Smith was brought in from Bury to replace Billy Minter in 1929. Smith had found success as a player with Blackburn Rovers in their only two First Division championship-winning seasons of 1911-1912 and 1913-1914 but retired as a player in 1920.
Whether Spurs' traditions of attractive attacking play can be attributed to Smith, it is not known, but it is known that he managed to convince the board to spend money on players who were able to form a side that played the kind of football that Spurs fans expect today. Spurs were promoted in 1933 and managed to reach the dizzy heights of 3rd in the First Division in 1934. This should have signalled the start of an illustrious career for Smith but alas, things started to go badly wrong.
During the 1934-35 season, Spurs started the season with 6 wins, 3 draws and 7 defeats up until December. From this point on, things simply fell apart and in the period between December and April the figures read 2 wins, 6 draws and 12 defeats. It is believed that the injury crisis during this period was horrendous and contributed to this barren run. In April 1935, Smith resigned claiming interference from the board and although his resignation was to have taken effect from the end of the season, he was encouraged to leave early. Although under the caretaker-manager Walter Hardinge, Spurs managed two wins and a draw in their final 6 games, they were relegated again.
