Topspurs League Cup Final VoxPop

Pat Healy, Leader of the Cork Spurs:

I fear for us if they score early as they're masters at killing the game. Ideally we score first, but not too early! and make them come out and play. I think we'll win 2-1 with Bent being one of the goalscorers!

Mark Astaire

I started supporting Spurs at the time of the 1967 final. Half the family supported Chelsea and the rest Tottenham including my grandfather who has supported the club since the 20's. So this is a sentimental final for me and I am taking all four of my kids. Chelsea is the most expensive team assembled in the history of English football and so my brain tells me they should win. My heart says that it would be great for the game if Spurs do win and I think we will 2-1 (what else) but it will depend on the ref standing up to the Chelsea intimidation, Ramos preparing the team and the players to deliver and JJ outplaying Lampard Junior.

Hans Meekers (Belgium Spurs):

I'll be there, but in fairness I can't see anything but a Chelscum win.... If they play like they did against us in the Prem, we're f*cked. You never know, we might play a blinder and they might be a little less focused on this trophy... living in hope

Laurence Coss: Final Thoughts

This sunday's final will hopefully show how far we have come in terms of both fitness and tactical acumen since Ramos has taken charge.

I can't offer any predictions in terms of scoreline, but hope that the Spurs players go into the game expecting to win, because mental blocks can defeat you before you even start. Yes, Chelsea are a strong team, but it is a two-horse race and anything can happen. In a way the press could help give us a platform by writing off our chances, especially as we don't always handle being favourites that well.

We are definitely second favourites, but we have a better chance of winning it than Arsenal (Ha, ha). A win takes us back into Europe next season, gives us a trophy well before the end of term and can mark the 125th year in style. We as supporters have been through the ups and downs already, and here's hoping we are very much on the up.

Come on You Spurs

OneDannyThomas:

My prediction involves a few ifs and buts depending upon the team selection of both sides.  My general feeling is that, although Chelsea are rightly favourites and therefore largely expected to win by most neutrals, we have a better chance of winning this cup final against Chelsea than had we played them at any other time in the last five years.   Its not often we have days like Sunday so I'm going to allow myself to be uncharacteristically optimistic and say 2-1 to Spurs.

Eric MalliaHong Kong Spurs

Huge anticipation amongst the ranks within Spurs in Hong Kong.  A genuine feeling that as underdogs, we'll perform at our best and sneak a win.  I think we'll want it more than them too.  2-1 to us.  JJ and Keano for us.  Kerry Dixon for them.  Ledders (or Keano) to lift the League Cup.  Come On You Spurs!

Will Dyson:

I was reminded the other week that my pre-season piece for Topspurs had said “I’ve never been more confident in us winning a trophy than I am right now……. so why do I feel sick whenever I think about the Premiership?”

So bearing in mind we’re already in one final, on our way to another and languishing in that oh so familiar mid-table obscurity in the Premier League, I’m feeling like I might just stick my neck out and ignore the fact that I hate making pre-match predictions on individual games (as, inevitably, my heart will always rule my head where Spurs are concerned).

Win this one game and we all get some more European awaydays next season.

One game against a team we KNOW that an in-form Spurs side are more than capable of beating.

A game where most of the neutrals want, but don’t really expect us to win.

In a stadium packed with well over our allocation of 31,000 fans, desperate to see us win.

I just have a feeling that it might just be our day…… 3-1.

It’s gonna be a nail biter….

Come on you Spurs!

Oh, and as Adebayor isn’t going to be on the pitch on Sunday, maybe we could all save our breath, not bother singing about him and just get behind Tottenham? Just a thought….. ;o)

Jason “Awayday Jonah” Barnett

I don't always do predictions, however I think Spurs will win 2-1 with the goals coming from Keane and Lennon.

Diamond White:

Ramos is the key man for us. He knows how to win finals, he has that bit of nous that Jol was sadly lacking and I think he simply would not allow our players to freeze on the day. Chelsea are a better side than us, let not kid ourselves otherwise, but with the right tactics, tempo and concentration we are talented and capable enough to win this. I'm also a great believer in the law of averages. We lost our last final, Chelsea have won their past few...it's our turn! A nail-biting 2-1 win. Come on you Spurs.

Il Falcone:

While it is a shameful slur on our current standing in the game that Spurs are regarded as ‘underdogs’ going into a cup final with that little club from Fulham, the weight off Tottenham shoulders can be used to the team’s advantage. On paper, Chelsea should win this. Any side that can muse over the option of playing one world-class player or another really does have an embarrassment of riches, and upwards of a billion petrodollars sp*nked on A-grade footballers tell its own sorry story.

But fack it, Audere est Facere and all that. We have good players, and a couple of matchwinners in our ranks. Fitness allowing, we have a much-improved defence and a general upsurge in stamina and application. And in the shape of Juande Ramos, we have a potential trump card.  If his tenure as Spurs boss has shown nothing else, it is that he is prepared to make bold, innovative changes to shape games. He is a proven winner and has the experience of knowing what it takes to prevail in cup competitions. Avram Grant, by contrast, is an unknown commodity. Nothing about Chelsea post Mourinho has told us anything about Grant’s competence, merely that when it comes to grinding out wins and shutting up shop with the world’s most expensive squad, he can follow Mourinho’s predictable template.

Depending on who Grant picks, there are Chelsea weaknesses that can be exploited. Ashley Cole has always been overrated and now that his pace has been blunted by injuries/off field distractions, Lennon should have some joy down the right. Similarly with John Terry. If ever there was case of Emperor’s new clothes it’s with this bloke. Brave, tough and in the classic English stopper mould he may be, but put him up against decent opposition and his poor positioning and headless chicken tendencies are exposed. If Berbatov fancies it, he can show the watching public what true quality looks like.

In the words of some pundit or other I don’t make predictions and never will. All I expect is to see Spurs have a go and take risks. Better to go down fighting and live up to the club’s ethos rather than play the role of plucky but obliging loser to the big four hegemony.

Christopher Dean

If we play our game and go at them from the start we will be in with a chance. What we cannot do is get drawn in to tight, cat-and-mouse exchange – Chelsea are highly skilled at sucking the life out of games before pouncing to seal victory.

They are in a great run of form, and have Terry, Lampard and Drogba back to bolster an already formidable line-up. But they have been unconvincing when up against the top sides this season, and with our performances against Arsenal in the semi-final and Man Utd in the league fresh in the memory, there is great cause for optimism.

We must play an attacking game though – it’s the Spurs way, and the only way this team knows how.

Prediction: Spurs 2 Chelsea 1

Lemmo

In my mind our defence will be the key.  If as many of us are anticipating, Ramos has been saving King for the game to (hopefully) play along side Woodgate we should be solid at the back, fitness pending of course.  If then the midfield and attack play like they have been recently I will be confident going into the game.  chelski will be favourites and may be over-confident, which may be their undoing, especially if we play like we have done recently against united and the goons in cup games where we have been underestimated.  Spurs for the cup: Spurs 3:1 chelski

Martin Cloake:

We've had too many nearlys, now is the time to win. Remember Dave Mackay lifting the Cup in 67 after coming back from two broken legs.  Remember playing them off the park for 70 minutes of last season's FA Cup quarter final. A win makes everything possible. It's time for Spurs to show what they're made of.

Shane O’Sullivan (Dublin Spurs):

Worried and anxious about Sunday. My 1st cup final and I desperately don't want it ruined by defeat. I keep looking for positives but the names in the Chelsea squad and their recent Wembley record really frightens me. I'd so much love to be facing a Wigan or a Fulham instead.

In our 125 year history who would ever thought we'd ever be underdogs to that little club from west London with a stadium doubling as a dog track / car park. How times have changed !!

Hoping for a miracle on Sunday and with Ramos at the helm and a fit Ledley in the back 4 we could be in with a shout of doing something special. If we turn them over it will be one of the happiest days of my life.

Head  -  Chelsea

Heart -  My Spurs

Steve Edmunds (Mexico):

I think we are geared up to win. We are a cup side again, a la 'Burkinshaw' but 'Juande' style! 2-1 to us in ET!

Guy Edema:

I'm like a kid looking forward to Christmas at the moment and this has certainly been one of the longer weeks of my life. Will Sunday ever come ? I cannot wait to see the west side of Wembley Stadium in the lillywhite of Spurs with the flags flying and belting out the WHL songs we know and love. My only hope is that the boys don't get overawed by the occasion and 'turn up' on the day and if they do, and we can be as clinical as we were against the Goons in the second leg of the semi, we can win 3-1.

Come On You Spurs!!

TV’s Rabbi Crackers

I honestly believe that the key man on the day is Ramos. I think he has given the likes of Wenger and Ferguson some food for thought and seems to be a good blend of the afore mentioned managers.

All i ask is that we play to our new found capabilities. If we do that and are un-phased by the occasion (hence Ramos being key as this is his job) there is no reason why don’t have a 50 / 50 chance of doing the business.

It is also important that all fans of Spurs enjoy the occasion. Take in the atmosphere, the walk up Wembley way et all, and hopefully celebrate hard that evening on the High Rd N17!!!! Come On You Spurs

Mario Sergides:

"I really think that we are with a shout to lift the cup on Sunday. Ramos has the tic tacs to beat Grant and hopefully it will be the first of many in the Ramos era. 2-1 Spurs.

Grahame Howells (Budapest Spurs)

Would love to raise an old chant – to the tune of the Stones:

I’m gonna tell ya how its gonna be

Chelsea 1 Tott’nam 3

And I’m gonna tell ya who’s gonna score

Berby (Gilzean) 1, Keane (Greaves) 2 more

However, feel there will be less goals (Chelsea with a mean defence) but reckon we can nick it 2-1. Enjoy your day - wish we were going, but we’ll be there in spirit.

(and now there in reality with a last minute ticket and flights from Budapest! –eds)

Jurgen B:

There can only be one winner, and that’s Spurs. The club is desperate for a trophy – any trophy – unlike Chelsea . Ramos has kicked them into shape and reminds me of Harvey the drill instructor on ITV’s “Fat Club” – ex Navy Seal etc. Just what the spoilt, pampered wannabe ‘big club’ players needed. It’s hard to believe, but perhaps this is the beginning of Spurs ceasing to be a team that flatters to deceive, that can’t be bothered when the going gets tough and that actually delivers on a consistent basis. 2-0 to Spurs, including an own goal by Tal Ben Haim, Chelsea ’s Ramon Vega.

Colin Ashby:

What do I want to see today? Before I get onto seeing us winning I want to see us play a cup final that will grace the new stadium. WE do stutter a bit but on our day we can and should beat anyone in the Premier League.

Chelsea have got an abundance of good players, the Russian has spent heavily to acquire them, but they are not unbeatable! I hope that the game is not spoilt by some over zealous official, I hope that we are not unlucky in defeat, I don’t want to see us go into extra time and then penalties. I want people to take note that if it had not been from some bad management early in the season we should and could have been up there near or in the top four.

So to summarise, I want us to play well, no bad luck- they can have plenty for all I care. I want us to show the world that we are a good football club, who entertain and score goals. I  would love us to be 3-0 up at half time and win 5-1 again, and bury the ghost.

But any score win for us will do. I believe that today is our day!

Richard Pymont

I am going to think positive and say we'll win 2-1 in ninety minutes with a display along the lines of the Arsenal semi 2nd leg.

What the Chelsea hater in me would like to happen is they totally outplay us but can't score, then Drogba puts in his own net trying to clear a corner in the last few seconds- as Kevin Keegan would say " I would love it, love it" if that happened.

Andy Varley (Sheffield Spurs)

As to a prediction: 4-3 Spurs, Juande’s attacking options will outshine a one dimensional Chelsea (well, pan-dimensional in the case of fat Frank, who disguises the majority of his bulk in the seventh dimension)

Jonathan Arundale

99 was dull till the diving Dane

2002 we went in as favourite and just never turned up

2008 we are going in as underdog's and lets just hope we shine, a season that started with so much hope that vanished so quickly, we are now building on something great, lets just hope the Spanish Magician can get that little extra out of the 16 on Sunday and take us up the 107 Wembley steps to glory.

My prediction for the final is a Robbie Keane summersault or 2 Come On You Spurs

Andy Nicholson

Predictions eh? I'm afraid I never make them for Tottenham because of superstition.

However, Juande seems to have won us all over for his supreme tactical nouse which has softened the blow of the disgraceful way in which Jol was treated. Whatever happens on Sunday, Spurs will not roll over and Chelsea may well find it's a tougher task than they thought, indeed, I do think Spurs can win as they'll be much hungrier for victory after so long without silverware.

Jim Duggan

In a close game, I fancy Spurs to nick it 1-0 after scoring late on
