Keith Burkinshaw: 14 July 1976 - 31 May 1984
After a limited playing career which included a seven-year spell at Liverpool. He played 1 game for them and ended his playing career at Workington and Scunthorpe (also acting as caretaker manager for a short time). Burkinshaw went to Newcastle as a coach in 1968. In 1975 he moved on to Spurs as first team coach under Terry Neill. He took the manager's job in 1976 and althought we were relegated the first season Spurs came straight back into the first division. In the top fligt he didn't feel that the team he had was strong enough to win any trophies.
His next moves was to sign the famous Argentinian pair Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricardo Villa, and Garth Crooks and Steve Archibald followed at the start of the 1980's. The team Burkinshaw created was the most attractive team in Britain during the 80's. He became our second most sucessful manager as we won three Cups FA Cup in 1981 and 1982 and the UEFA Cup, as well as being runners up in the League cup and having consecutive 4th place finishes in 82/3 and 83/4.
During the 83-84 season he had become disillusioned with the boardroom which was led by Irving Scholar. Before the UEFA win he had announced his intention to resign. Burkinshaw's comment after he had walked out of the gates for the last time was "There used to be a football club there".
