| When Frank Brettel left the post as Spurs manager
Spurs advertised the job but eventually appointed John Cameron, a player
already with the club. Cameron was one of Brettell's first signings, from
Everton, in May 1898. He was appointed manager/player/secretary at an very
early stage in his career, he was in his early 20's and the date was 17th
February 1899. |
| Cameron's first few years as Spurs' playing
manager were highly successful. He took the club to the Southern League
championship in 1899-1900 and the FA Cup in 1900-01. On April 27, 1901 we
became the first (and only) non-league side to win the cup. It was Cameron
who pulled us back, 1-1 seven minutes into the second half. |
| We were runners-up in the Southern League in
1901-02 and 1903-04. By 1904 he had wound down his playing career which
resulted in a final tally of 43 goals in 111 Southern League Games, plus
seven in 25 FA Cup ties for spurs. After such a successful start to his
career, Cameron found success harder to come by and even though the burden of
his duty as secretary was off-loaded onto Arthur Turner in 1906, his team was
unable to emulate the feats in 1900 and 1901.
Cameron resigned on 16 March 1907. |
