| Born in Tottenham and the first man to lead Spurs to the championship Born in Tottenham, Arthur rowe was a Spurs man through and through. Arthur Rowe will always be remembered as the manager of the 'push-and-run' side of the 1950's. Like Bill Nicholson, Rowe worked his way up through Northfleet Nursery to become a Spurs professional in 1929. | |||||||||||||||
| He joined as a schoolboy in 1921, signed as a centre-half in 1929 and played throughout the 1930s. He played for us during 8 seasons & 201 appearances and was forced to quit his playing career in 1939 because of a cartilage operation. He won an England cap against France in 1933-34 at White Hart Lane at the age of 27. This was his only full cap and the first full international to be played at White Hart Lane. | |||||||||||||||
| After his playing career he went on to a number of coaching jobs, one in Hungary which the second world war stopped as he returned home to become a physical instructor in the Army. His first club was the non-league club Chelmsford city. This apponitment was very succesfull as he won a Southern League Cup trophy. | |||||||||||||||
| He then returned to Spurs in 1949 after the dismissal of Joe Hulme and instantly instigated the return to First Division football. With signings like Alf Ramsey from Southampton, Rowe worked the simple but effective 'push and run' style that brought us our first League Championship in 1951, only a season after gaining promotion from the old Second Division. | |||||||||||||||
| The year after, Spurs finished second and the year after that they reached the FA cup semi-final. From this point, the successful squad were starting to show their age and the young talent wasn't coming through the ranks and, consequently, results started to dip. Rowe's health started to fail and he never fully recovered from a breakdown in 1954. During his recouperation, Jimmy Anderson was made acting manager, to become the full-time manager when Rowe resigned in 1955. | |||||||||||||||
